From the people trying to fix my memory card:

“Unfortunately, although we have tried everything we know there is just no way of accessing any data on your CF card. Physical damage can cause these devices to act strangely and the infuriating thing is we can mount the device at 977mb but the communication isn’t working. We have exhausted all options available to us so unfortunately we will have to give up and return the device to you, if you require. Alternatively we can destroy it for you.

Sorry we have been unable to recover your data.”

So, what have we learned? Do not run over your memory cards. You’d think they’d write that on the box…

It’s not like I ever have SD cards going spare (damn tiny, easily lose-able media!) but if I did, I’d definitely be giving this a go.

This beautiful little book is made from an old SD card and contains some of the photos that the creator had taken on the card. What a gorgeous idea – I salute the fiddliness of this project!

Oh, and still no news on my own, tragically malformed memory card. SanDisk said they needed “more time” *gulp*…

doh!

As I was rushing out the door this morning, I was handed a small pot of soup, two semi-frozen pitta breads, a A4 pad, some loose sheets of VERY IMPORTANT SCRIBBLINGS and a CF card which contained some VERY IMPORTANT IMAGES. I wobbled across the crunchy gravel drive to my car, dumped the contents of my arms on the back seat, jumped into the front and scooted to work.

When the hubbub caused by my usual “checkemail-checkworkemail-checkforum-checkTwitter/Facebook/Gawker”  routine had died down, I reached for my bag to pick out the CF card and upload said V.I.I to my work Mac to start processing them for the article.

Uh-oh.

The CF card was eventually located on my driveway, slightly buckled from where I’d happily driven over it, and as I swore at myself for not uploading the images sooner (idiot) I started scouring the web for image retrieval programs. So far, it’s not going so well -  the computer can see the card – well, sort of – but it can’t find the pictures. I’m going to try this out on one of the work PCs tomorrow. If it works, you’ll probably read about my celebrations in the weekend papers – if it doesn’t, I’m going to try to wangle something with the card manufacturers. As someone on the DSLRUser forum pointed out, it’s hardly an extreme memory card if it was ended by a gravel drive in deepest Englandshire. Anyway – will keep my fingers and toes crossed.
